ESTER-C®: THE THIRD GENERATION OF VITAMIN C
The name 'Ascorbic acid' has a direct connection with the ability of vitamin C to prevent scurvy (A-scorbut is Latin for anti-scurvy). Vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid has been available as a dietary supplement for over 30 years. The acidity of ascorbic acid has been known to cause stomach and digestive problems.
A new form of vitamin C was introduced about ten years ago in the form of calcium ascorbate. The pH-neutral dietary supplement, in which the ascorbic acid is chemically bound with calcium, does not have the disadvantages of the acid form.

WHY VITAMIN C?
Scienctist believe, millions of years ago a spontaneous mutation took place in the genetic material of our ancestors, resulting in the loss of the ability to produce vitamin C. Ever since this event, primates (such as humans) completely depend on nutrition for vitamin C. An interesting theory is, the loss of ability to synthesize vitamin C may have accelerated the evolution of the human race. After all, vitamin C is such an important anti-oxidant that its loss must have significantly increased the formation of free radicals, inducing frequent DNA mutations. As a result, many species of primates evolved in rapid succession, one of which evolved to the ancestor of modern mankind.
HOW MUCH VITAMIN C?
The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for adults in Europe is 80 mg vitamin c per day. However, there is great consensus amonst scientists about the Maximal Safe Dosage, which is many times higher.
The Optimal Amount of vitamin C necessary to fully meet the body demand, is difficult to estimate. It is interesting to realize, nearly all animals are capable to produce their own vitamin C. Exceptions are all primates (next to humans), the guinea pig, the rainbow trout and the coho salon.
The table below shows the amount of vitamin C, synthesized by several mammals. A differentiation is made between healthy, unstressed animals and sick or stressed animals.

Table above shows, vatamin C production in animals may vary enormously. When seriously sick or stressed, a goat may produce 6 x the amount of vitamin C compared to healthy / unstressed situation; a rabbit even 25 x as much! Converting the values of l to an average human with a body weight of 70 kg, would lead to an astonishing conclusion:
A healthy adult would need to consume 0,4 – 3 gram vitamin C on a daily base to equal the vitamin C status of healthy, unstressed mammals. In case of stress and/or physical disease, an adult would need to consume 3 – 17 gram vitamine C on a daily base to equal to vitamin C status of mammals in similar conditions.
Two-fold Nobel price winner Linus Pauling studied the behavior of anthropoids (such as gorilla's) in the wild and found they consume huge amounts of vitamin C. Based on his findings, Linus Pauling recommended adult humans to consume 2,3–10 gram vitamin C on a daily base.
