Description

The therapists at Kala Health on digestion, and how supplementing with digestive enzymes can contribute to the digestion of food in the intestines.

Enzymes for digestion

All enzymes in this formula are of vegetable origin, produced through fermentation using fungi such as Aspergillus, Rhizopus, Candida, Saccharomyces and Bacillus subtilus spp. These enzymes have been combined in one tablet because of the unique properties of each enzyme separately, and because of their ability to work optimally together in the gastrointestinal tract.

The so-called enzyme activity of the enzymes in this formula is determined according to the standard Food Chemical Codex procedure, which is recognized by the FDA.

This digestive formula is intended for anyone who could benefit from digestive enzyme supplementation. These may be people who temporarily or permanently produce fewer digestive enzymes, or people with a disturbed composition of the intestinal flora.

Background information

Enzymes in the body are mainly produced in the alkaline environment of the intestine. In capsule form, such enzymes would not survive the acidic environment of the stomach unless there is a layer around the capsules that protects against stomach acid. However, applying such a layer is expensive.

The plant-based enzymes in this formula offer the solution to this dilemma. First of all, they are less sensitive to temperatures, and therefore generally more effective. In addition, vegetable enzymes are less sensitive to acid. Speaking in technical terms: microbial enzymes are active in the pH range from 3.0 to 9.0. This allows these enzymes to exert their effectiveness in both the stomach and the intestine.

The so-called enzyme activity of the enzymes in this formula is determined according to the standard Food Chemical Codex procedure, which is recognized by the FDA.

What are the best digestive enzymes, and what do they do?

Enzymes are special proteins that play a key role in all biochemical reactions and metabolic processes in the body. Typically, digestive enzymes are divided into three different classes depending on the type of food they help break down:

  • Proteases ensure the breakdown of proteins;
  • Lipases ensure the breakdown of fats;
  • Carbohydrases ensure the breakdown of carbohydrates.

Spijsvertering Kala Health

Digestive enzymes are essential for breaking down food into individual nutrients that can be absorbed. Enzymatic breakdown occurs in a number of steps, starting with wetting through the oral mucosa and ending in the small intestine where enzymes further split the food digest into individual nutrients that can be absorbed. An estimated 90% of nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine.

How does digestion work?

Enzymes are produced in different parts of the digestive tract. That sounds simple, but there is quite a bit involved. In this way, the enzyme pepsin is released into the stomach and is active in the acidic environment of the stomach. Other enzymes are released from the pancreas to the small intestine and are only active in an environment that is alkaline rather than acidic. The process of digestion is therefore a subtle interplay between food and organs, where the enzymes must be released in the right order, in the right place and under the right conditions.

Who are these enzymes intended for?

An important target group is the somewhat older person. With increasing age, the digestive tract’s ability to digest food decreases. The stomach produces less acid, and the production of digestive enzymes decreases. This is usually noticeable by excessive gas formation and/or stool that is less well digested. In such situations it may be useful to use digestive enzymes as a dietary supplement.
