Antioxidants are like the protectors of our body. Literally translated, ‘antioxidant’ means anti (against) and oxidant (a substance that causes oxidation). Oxidation is a chemical process where molecules lose electrons and become unstable. Antioxidants are able to combat this instability by donating electrons to the damaged molecules, preventing further damage.

Free radicals are unstable molecules produced naturally in our bodies as by-products of metabolic processes. They can also be created by exposure to environmental pollutants, such as cigarette smoke and UV radiation. Free radicals tend to ‘steal’ electrons from healthy cells, leading to cell damage and ageing. This process is known as oxidative stress and can contribute to various health problems.
