Description
Ester-C Vitamin: Third Generation Vitamin C
Ester-C Vitamin is viewed as the third generation of vitamin C. About ten years ago, calcium ascorbate was introduced. This is a form of vitamin C in which the ascorbic acid is bound to calcium. This dietary supplement is pH-neutral (acid-free) and causes far fewer digestive issues than Vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid. Vitamin C as ascorbic acid has been available for over thirty years, but due to its acidic nature, it tends to lead to digestive problems and discomfort. Ester-C Vitamin’s unique, patented formula combines many advantages over both of the aforementioned: ascorbic acid and calcium ascorbate. You can order this Kala Health nutritional supplement quickly and easily through our web store.
What is Ester-C Vitamin?
Humans do not produce their own vitamin C, making us completely dependent on our diets for our vitamin C supply. Once vitamin C is absorbed into the body, it is converted into metabolites. The main metabolite is called threnoacid. Metabolites promote the absorption and utilization of vitamin C in the body. In addition, threnoic acid is able to mobilise the vitamin C already stored in the body and make it available. Ester-C is a patented form of pH-neutral Vitamin C with natural metabolites. Its formula contains bioflavonoids in the form of water-soluble substances. Along with vitamin C, these bioflavonoids are mainly found in fresh fruits and vegetables. Bioflavonoids are biologically active substances, which, among other things, promote Vitamin C bioavailability.
Benefits of Ester-C®
Once vitamin C is absorbed into the body, it is converted into various metabolites, the most important of which is threonic acid. These metabolites promote the absorption and utilization of vitamin C in the body. Moreover, threonic acid appears to be able to mobilise vitamin C already stored in the body and make it available. Research has shown that Ester-C, compared to ‘normal’ vitamin C (ascorbic acid):
- Is absorbed into the blood twice as quickly and remains in the body twice as long;
- Leads to higher levels of vitamin C in the blood
- Improves the absorption of vitamin C into, for instance, the white blood cells (leukocytes), and remains there longer;
- Is well-tolerated by the stomach and intestines even when ingested in large quantities;
- Results in a four-fold decrease in urinary oxalate excretion;
- Results in a six-fold decrease in ascorbate loss through urine;
- Is not harmful to tooth enamel.
Bioflavonoids
The bioflavonoids found in this formula are water-soluble compounds, which are found along with vitamin C in, among some other sources, fresh fruits and vegetables. Bioflavonoids are biologically active substances, which, among other functions, promote vitamin C bioavailability.

Background information
WHY VITAMIN C?
Scientists suspect that tens of millions of years ago, a spontaneous mutation occurred in our distant ancestors’ genetic material. It caused them to lose the ability to produce their own vitamin C. Ever since, humans have been completely dependent on their diet for their vitamin C supply. Interesting is the theory that this development caused human evolution to proceed at a rapid pace. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant, and its loss must have led to a sharp increase in the amount of free radicals, which in turn triggered large numbers of DNA mutations. Many primate species sprang up in quick succession, one of which developed into the ancestor of modern man.
HOW MUCH VITAMIN C?
In the Netherlands, the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of vitamin C is 80 mg for adults. Most experts agree, however, that the Maximum Safe Dose is much higher.
The Optimal Amount of vitamin C, required to fully meet the body’s vitamin C needs, is difficult to estimate. One fascinating discovery is that almost all animal species are capable of producing their own vitamin C. Exceptions include all apes (including humans), guinea pigs, rainbow trout, and coho salmon.
