MSM GC Plus Capsules – With Undenatured Type II Collagen and Seawater Concentrate

Six high-quality branded ingredients in one formula. No fillers, manufactured in the Netherlands.

✓ 6 patented branded ingredients ✓ With Collavant® and Aquamin® ✓ Vegetarian capsule without fillers

The combination of six high-quality branded ingredients

MSM GC Plus is the most comprehensive formula within the Kala Health product line for natural mobility. This formula combines no fewer than six different high-quality ingredients: MSM, glucosamine, chondroitin, vitamin C, undenatured type II collagen and seawater concentrate. Only patented branded ingredients have been used, guaranteeing the highest quality and biological efficacy: OptiMSM®, NaturGlux®, ChondroPure®, Ester-C®, Collavant® and Aquamin®.

This choice for quality is not arbitrary. Extensive scientific research has been conducted on MSM, glucosamine, chondroitin and collagen. This research shows that the purity of the ingredients used has a greater impact on results than the specific form. Contaminated or inferior ingredients simply do not deliver the same results as pharmaceutical-grade ingredients. That is why Kala Health selects only branded ingredients that have been extensively tested for both the presence of pure active substances and the absence of contaminants.

A distinctive feature of MSM GC Plus is that the formula contains no fillers. While many supplements contain bulking agents, binders and anti-caking agents, MSM GC Plus uses all space in the vegetarian capsule for active ingredients. This is possible because the six branded ingredients are so pure that they require no additional excipients for processing. The result is a formula where every milligram counts.

The formula contains vitamin C in the form of Ester-C®, which contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage and bones. This makes MSM GC Plus a complete formula for anyone who wants to optimally support their body with an active lifestyle.

“Purity determines effectiveness”

“Extensive scientific research has been conducted on glucosamine and chondroitin. What this shows: the purity of ingredients is decisive for effectiveness. Inferior raw materials simply do not deliver the same results. That is why we exclusively use patented branded ingredients that we extensively test, both for the presence of pure active substances and the absence of contaminants.”

– Paul Klein Breteler, founder of Kala Health

The six branded ingredients explained

OptiMSM® – The purest form of MSM

OptiMSM® is the purest form of MSM on the market. MSM is a very small, light molecule, which makes it easily absorbed by the body. MSM is the form in which sulphur naturally occurs in all living organisms and in which it is biologically active. In nature, MSM is found in fruits, vegetables and in the milk of grazing cows. Each MSM GC Plus capsule contains 300 mg OptiMSM®.

NaturGlux® – Plant-based glucosamine

Glucosamine is a substance that occurs naturally in the human body. It is also found in the shells of shellfish such as shrimp, crabs and lobsters. These shells contain chitin, a polysaccharide that can be converted into glucosamine. However, NaturGlux® glucosamine is of plant origin and is produced by fermentation of corn. This makes the formula free from common allergens associated with shellfish – an important benefit for people with allergies. Each capsule contains 225 mg NaturGlux® glucosamine HCl, which corresponds to 188 mg elemental glucosamine.

ChondroPure® – Optimal molecular size for absorption

Chondroitin is present in foods with a high cartilage content, particularly from animals such as cattle, pigs and sharks. The cartilage of these animals contains chondroitin sulphate, a compound that is extracted for use in food supplements. ChondroPure® chondroitin is sourced from bovine trachea. The molecules are relatively small (< 10,000 daltons), which is crucial for effective absorption by the body. Each capsule contains 200 mg ChondroPure® chondroitin sulphate.

Ester-C® – Stomach-friendly vitamin C

The MSM GC Plus formula deliberately uses the form of vitamin C known as Ester-C® (calcium ascorbate). This patented form of vitamin C is characterised by improved absorption and a gentler effect on the stomach compared to traditional ascorbic acid. Each capsule contains 60 mg Ester-C®, which corresponds to 75% of the reference intake.

Collavant® – Undenatured type II collagen

Collavant® is an undenatured type II collagen, sourced from chicken sternum cartilage (breastbone cartilage). Type II collagen occurs naturally in the cartilage of vertebrates and is the most common type of collagen in joint cartilage.

What makes undenatured collagen special is its fundamentally different mechanism of action compared to hydrolysed collagen:

Undenatured versus hydrolysed collagen: two different approaches

Hydrolysed collagen is broken down by enzymatic processes into small peptides (protein fragments). In this process, the original collagen structure is completely lost, what remains are loose amino acids and short peptide chains. These are absorbed in the intestine, but not as collagen: the body does not absorb collagen, only its breakdown products. To supply sufficient building blocks, relatively high dosages are required. Often 5 to 10 grams per day.

Undenatured collagen, on the other hand, consists of natural, intact collagen molecules, exactly as they occur in nature, retaining their three-dimensional structure. These intact molecules are not broken down for absorption but work via a different mechanism: they pass through the digestive tract and come into contact with the gut-associated part of the immune system (GALT – Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue).

Because the collagen molecules remain intact, they retain their natural structure. The immune system recognises this structure as “self” cartilage tissue. This process is known as oral tolerance. The theory is that this recognition stimulates the body to support its own collagen production, the body is essentially “reminded” of the structure of healthy cartilage. Because the mechanism of action is not dependent on absorption as building material, only small amounts are needed. In studies, dosages of 10 to 40 mg per day are used, a fraction of the amount of hydrolysed collagen.

Each MSM GC Plus capsule contains 15 mg Collavant® undenatured type II collagen. This may seem little compared to the grams of hydrolysed collagen in some products, but is consistent with the specific mechanism of action of undenatured collagen.

Aquamin® – Seawater concentrate with 80 natural minerals

Aquamin® MG TG is a unique mineral complex harvested from the deep, pure waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Ireland. The source is Lithothamnion calcareum, a red algae that absorbs and stores minerals from seawater in its cell structure during its life cycle.

What makes Aquamin® special?

Unlike isolated mineral supplements, Aquamin® contains all 80 natural minerals and trace elements in their natural ratios, exactly as they occur in nature. The main minerals are:

  • Magnesium – the main mineral in Aquamin® MG TG
  • Calcium – in natural, bioavailable form
  • Trace elements – including zinc, selenium, manganese and many others

The minerals in Aquamin® are embedded in a natural matrix, which may enhance bioavailability. Harvesting takes place in the protected waters off the Irish coast, where strict quality controls apply.

Each MSM GC Plus capsule contains 50 mg Aquamin® MG TG, adding a broad base of natural minerals and trace elements to the formula.

Why no fillers?

An important distinguishing feature of MSM GC Plus is the absence of fillers. Most food supplements contain various excipients in addition to active ingredients:

  • Bulking agents – to bring the capsule or tablet to weight
  • Binders – to hold ingredients together
  • Anti-caking agents – to ensure smooth production
  • Lubricants – to keep machinery functioning properly

With MSM GC Plus, these excipients are not needed. The six branded ingredients are so pure and have such good processing properties that they can be encapsulated without additives. The result: a vegetarian capsule of 975 mg in which every milligram consists of active ingredients.

Compare for yourself: Look at the ingredient list of random supplements in the shop. You will often encounter terms such as microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide or talc. With MSM GC Plus, you will find only the six active ingredients and the vegetarian capsule (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose).

The MSM GC Product Line: three formulas for natural mobility

The Kala Health product line for natural mobility consists of three different formulas, each with its own combination of high-quality branded ingredients. MSM GC Plus capsules form the most comprehensive formula within this line, with six branded ingredients including undenatured type II collagen and seawater concentrate.

For those looking for a basic formula, there is MSM GC tablets with MSM, glucosamine, chondroitin and vitamin C. Additionally, there is MSM GC Vegan, with plant-based chondroitin (MythoCondro®) instead of animal-derived chondroitin, making this formula fully suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

What is MSM?

MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane, an organically bound form of sulphur. It is a natural substance that occurs naturally in various foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables. Remarkably, breast milk is the richest natural source of MSM. As we age, the amount of MSM in the human body decreases.

MSM is a very small, light molecule. This makes MSM easy for the body to absorb. MSM is the form in which sulphur naturally occurs in all living organisms and in which it is biologically active. However, through food processing, heating and storage, the MSM content in food decreases rapidly, which is why supplementation may be interesting for many people.

The recommended dosage for most people varies between 2 and 8 grams of MSM per day, depending on individual needs and goals.

What is Glucosamine and which form is best?

Glucosamine is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. Glucosamine as a molecule is inherently unstable and is converted into a ‘salt’ by binding with another molecule. The most common glucosamine salts on the market are:

  • Glucosamine sulphate.2KCl
  • Glucosamine sulphate.NaCl
  • Glucosamine HCl

There is some uncertainty about which of these three forms is most effective. However, many scientists agree that the specific form of the salt should not be of great importance. In the acidic environment of the stomach, the salt breaks down into a glucosamine molecule and a residual group. The glucosamine molecule is then absorbed in the intestine, while the remaining molecule completely disappears among the numerous hydrochloric acid molecules (-HCl) in the gastric juice.

The purity of Glucosamine is more important than the form

There are ‘experts’ who claim that glucosamine sulphate.NaCl is the only scientifically proven effective form of glucosamine. However, it is now known that the proven effectiveness depends more on purity than on the specific form of glucosamine. The glucosamine sulphate.NaCl used in various renowned studies was a patented, pharmaceutical-grade product. Studies with other forms of glucosamine (glucosamine sulphate.2KCl and glucosamine HCl) show that the quality of the glucosamine used may have had a greater influence on research results than the form of glucosamine (sulphate versus HCl).

Scientific research on bioavailability

Aghazadeh et al. (2011) orally administered rats an equal dose of glucosamine of both forms. The glucosamine sulphate.NaCl used was a patented, pharmaceutical-grade product from Rottapharm, while the glucosamine HCl used was high-quality and plant-based. The results showed that the change in plasma concentration of glucosamine over time was virtually identical.

The same authors also examined the excretion of glucosamine in the urine of four human volunteers after oral intake of 1500 mg glucosamine sulphate.NaCl (Rottapharm) or high-quality glucosamine HCl. The results showed that the excretion of both forms was almost identical. The authors concluded that both the absorption and excretion of the glucosamine sulphate.NaCl and glucosamine HCl used are identical and show no difference in bioavailability for the body.

Glucosamine HCl contains more elemental glucosamine

Since differences in bioavailability are excluded, it becomes interesting to look at the economic aspects. A sulphate group has considerably more weight than an HCl group. This becomes clear in the percentage of elemental glucosamine:

Glucosamine form Elemental glucosamine
Glucosamine sulphate.2KCl 58%
Glucosamine sulphate.NaCl 62%
Glucosamine HCl (NaturGlux®) 82%

In other words: to consume a comparable amount of elemental glucosamine, you would need to take 41% and 32% more glucosamine sulphate.2KCl and glucosamine sulphate.NaCl respectively than glucosamine HCl.

Conclusions about glucosamine forms

  • Research shows that the bioavailability of glucosamine HCl and glucosamine sulphate.NaCl is equivalent. Glucosamine HCl contains 32% more elemental glucosamine and is also available from a plant-based source (through fermentation of corn dextrose).
  • A plant-based source contains no animal proteins.
  • Plant-based glucosamine HCl is preferable to glucosamine sulphate.NaCl, provided both are of identical (pharmaceutical) quality.
  • The third commonly used form is glucosamine sulphate.2KCl. Due to the relatively low amount of elemental glucosamine and often questionable quality, this is the least preferred form.

What is Chondroitin?

Chondroitin, more precisely chondroitin sulphates, consist of elongated chains of interconnected molecules of galactosamine sulphate and glucuronic acid. They form the essential chains of glycosaminoglycans (GAG).

For a long time, it was thought that chondroitin molecules were too large to be absorbed by the body, which meant that intake was considered pointless. Recently, however, this view has been nuanced, as small chondroitin molecules are indeed absorbed intact by the body.

Where does Chondroitin come from?

Chondroitin is mainly commercially obtained from animal cartilage, sourced from cattle. The effectiveness of chondroitin is strongly linked to its concentration and quality. Due to the costliness of this substance, it is often ‘diluted’. Many cheap ‘chondroitin’ preparations on the market contain only a limited percentage of actual chondroitin.

Why do we choose ChondroPure®?

A high-quality preparation guarantees a minimum chondroitin concentration of 90%. An additional problem with many chondroitin products is that large chondroitin molecules are barely absorbed by the body, making the intake of such preparations of little value.

Clinical studies have shown that only small molecules (molecular weight < 25,000 daltons) can be well absorbed by the body. ChondroPure® chondroitin is sourced from bovine trachea and is characterised by particularly small molecules (< 10,000 daltons). Well below the threshold for optimal absorption.

Benefits of MSM GC Plus: the role of Vitamin C

MSM GC Plus contains vitamin C in the form of Ester-C®. Although extensive scientific research has been conducted on MSM, glucosamine, chondroitin and collagen, the European Union has not (yet) approved health claims for these substances. Vitamin C is the only ingredient in this formula for which the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has approved health claims:

  • ✓ Cartilage: Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage
  • ✓ Bones: Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of bones
  • ✓ Cell protection: Vitamin C helps protect cells from oxidative stress
  • ✓ Energy: Vitamin C contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism
  • ✓ Immune system: Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system
  • ✓ Fatigue: Vitamin C contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
  • ✓ Nervous system: Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the nervous system

One MSM GC Plus capsule contains 60 mg of vitamin C, which corresponds to 75% of the reference intake. At the recommended dosage of 2 capsules per day, 150% of the daily reference intake is achieved.

Natural food sources

MSM in food

MSM occurs naturally in fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and in the milk of grazing cows. Breast milk is the richest natural source of MSM. However, through food processing, heating and storage, the MSM content in food decreases rapidly.

Glucosamine in food

Glucosamine does not occur directly in the food we eat daily. The human body produces glucosamine itself. Traditionally, glucosamine for supplements is obtained from the shells of shellfish, but NaturGlux® is produced by fermentation of plant-based corn.

Chondroitin in food

Chondroitin is present in foods with a high cartilage content, particularly from animals such as cattle, pigs and sharks. Eating cartilage (for example from chicken bones or in bone broth) provides small amounts of chondroitin. However, the concentrations are much lower than in concentrated supplements.

Collagen in food

Type II collagen occurs naturally in cartilage-rich foods, particularly in chicken cartilage, fish bones and broth made from bones and cartilage. However, the collagen in food is largely denatured by heating. Undenatured type II collagen such as Collavant® retains its natural structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

MSM GC Plus is the most comprehensive formula within the Kala Health product line for natural mobility. It combines six high-quality branded ingredients: MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), glucosamine, chondroitin, vitamin C, undenatured type II collagen and seawater concentrate. The added vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage and bones.

MSM GC Plus stands out in three ways. First, it contains six patented branded ingredients of pharmaceutical quality: OptiMSM®, NaturGlux®, ChondroPure®, Ester-C®, Collavant® and Aquamin®. Second, the formula contains no fillers – all space in the capsule is used for active ingredients. Third, the product is fully manufactured in our own FSSC 22000-certified factory in the Netherlands.

The MSM GC product line consists of three formulas. MSM GC tablets contain MSM, glucosamine, chondroitin and vitamin C. MSM GC Plus capsules contain the same base plus undenatured type II collagen (Collavant®) and seawater concentrate (Aquamin®). MSM GC Vegan capsules contain plant-based chondroitin (MythoCondro®) instead of animal-derived chondroitin, making it suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Undenatured type II collagen (Collavant®) consists of intact collagen molecules that retain their natural three-dimensional structure. This differs fundamentally from hydrolysed collagen, which is enzymatically broken down into small peptides. Hydrolysed collagen is absorbed as building material and requires high dosages (5-10 grams per day). Undenatured collagen remains intact and works via the gut-associated part of the immune system (GALT), where the intact molecules are recognised. Due to this different mechanism of action, much lower dosages are used in studies (10-40 mg per day).

This relates to the fundamentally different mechanism of action. Hydrolysed collagen serves as building material and therefore requires high dosages. Undenatured collagen such as Collavant® does not work through absorption as building material, but through interaction with the immune system in the gut (oral tolerance). Only small amounts are needed for this mechanism. The 15 mg per capsule is consistent with the dosages used in scientific studies.

Aquamin® MG TG is a seawater concentrate harvested from the deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Ireland. The source is Lithothamnion calcareum, a red algae that absorbs minerals from seawater during its life cycle. The result is a natural complex of 80 minerals and trace elements in their natural ratios, including magnesium, calcium, zinc, selenium and manganese.

The six branded ingredients in MSM GC Plus are so pure and have such good processing properties that they can be encapsulated without additives. While many supplements contain bulking agents, binders and anti-caking agents, MSM GC Plus uses all space in the capsule (975 mg) for active ingredients. This is a direct result of choosing high-quality branded ingredients.

Yes. The glucosamine in MSM GC Plus comes from NaturGlux®, which is produced by fermentation of corn. This makes the formula completely free from shellfish allergens – unlike traditional glucosamine which is obtained from shrimp, crabs or lobsters.

The capsule itself is vegetarian (HPMC), but the formula contains ingredients of animal origin: ChondroPure® chondroitin (from bovine trachea) and Collavant® collagen (from chicken cartilage). Therefore, this product is not suitable for strict vegetarians or vegans. For them, we offer MSM GC Vegan with plant-based chondroitin.

The recommended dosage for adults is 1 to 2 capsules per day, preferably with a meal and some water. One capsule contains 300 mg MSM, 225 mg glucosamine, 200 mg chondroitin, 60 mg vitamin C (75% RI), 50 mg seawater concentrate and 15 mg undenatured type II collagen. At 2 capsules per day, you receive 150% of the reference intake for vitamin C.

No, this product is not suitable for those with an allergy to chicken or chicken products (due to Collavant® collagen from chicken cartilage) or an allergy to beef or beef products (due to ChondroPure® chondroitin from bovine trachea).

If you are taking blood thinners, we recommend consulting your doctor first before using MSM GC Plus. Chondroitin may potentially interact with blood-thinning medication.

We advise consulting a doctor or healthcare professional first before using MSM GC Plus during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Every batch of MSM GC Plus capsules is extensively tested in an independent laboratory for microbiological purity and heavy metals. The product is manufactured in our own FSSC 22000-certified factory in the Netherlands. All raw materials are tested for the presence of pure active substances and the absence of contaminants. The complete Product Specification Sheet is available upon request.

Although extensive scientific research has been conducted on these ingredients, the European Union (EFSA) has not yet approved health claims for them. Only for vitamin C are authorised claims permitted, such as the contribution to normal collagen formation for cartilage and bones. Due to legal restrictions, we may not disclose all details about the possible effects. For content-related questions, please contact us at 070-345-0290 or info@kalahealth.eu.
