MSM tablets, powder or capsules: which one is better?
Before comparing MSM tablets, powder and capsules, it is important to know what MSM is and what it does in the body.
What is MSM?
MSM is short for Methylsulfonylmethane, or organically bound sulfur. The chemical formula of MSM is CH3SO2CH3. It is a small, light molecule. MSM contains over 34% sulfur, and contains two methyl groups. MSM is found naturally in rainwater, fresh fruits and vegetables. The levels in these food products typically range from 1 to 4 mg of MSM per kg. Interestingly, breast milk (!) is the richest natural source of MSM. However, MSM is relatively volatile, and quickly disappears when food is heated or stored for long periods of time.
Where does MSM originate from?
The importance of MSM to life on earth is great. Without MSM, life on Earth as we know it today would not exist. MSM is formed in nature as part of the earth’s sulfur cycle:
Algae and plant plankton in the oceans absorb sulfur from seawater, converting it into a simple, organic form. When plankton and algae die, enzymes cause the organic sulfur compounds to break down into Dimethyl sulfide (DMS). This substance is volatile, and dissolves poorly in water. It collects high in the atmosphere, where it is converted under the influence of ultraviolet light and ozone into Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and further into Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). DMSO and MSM are readily soluble in water. DMSO and MSM form the condensation nuclei necessary for the formation of raindrops. Without DMSO and MSM in the air, no clouds form and it won’t rain! Roots of trees and plants are able to absorb DMSO and MSM quickly and efficiently from rainwater.
Different types of MSM
MSM supplements are available in different forms:
MSM powder has the most natural texture. No additives are needed to press it into tablet form, for example. Dosing can be done with a scale or measuring spoon. A disadvantage can be the taste: it is not always perceived as delicious. The powder can be mixed with smoothies or juice to mask the taste.
MSM capsules you don’t need to dose first. You can take them right away, this is practical and also saves time. There is no taste associated with them. A disadvantage can be that some capsules are made of gelatin and thus are not vegan. Kala Health’s OptiMSM capsules, however, are suitable for vegans.
MSM tablets are easy to dose because they are easily broken in half. Kala Health’s tablets consist of more than 90% of the purest form of MSM: OptiMSM®.
MSM gel can be applied to the skin several times a day. The sulfur-containing gel supports elastin and collagen: structures responsible for skin firmness. MSM is a small molecule and can be quickly absorbed by the skin.
All preparations offer different benefits. The dosage plays the most decisive role.
What should you look for when buying MSM?
To see if MSM is of high quality you can pay attention to:
– Sulfur content
– Any additives
– Whether it is vegan, gluten and lactose free
– And what dosage is recommended
Sulfur content is the most important factor in choosing the best MSM. Highly dosed MSM consists of 99.9% sulfur. This leaves less room for other ingredients that may affect its action. Note that in body care products, the sulfur content is lower than in powders, capsules and tablets. Always check the label to see if additional (unnecessary) substances have been added.
The product also always shows whether it is vegan, GM-,gluten-. And lactose free. Is this not on the label of the product? Then it is better to avoid the product.
OPTIMSM of the best quality
The highest quality MSM available. is: OptiMSM®. This is the purest MSM available. OptiMSM® is purified using multiple distillation. Bergstrom Nutrition handles production in the United States. The dietary supplement is available in many forms: as a powder, capsules, tablets and gel. The powder can be dissolved in water or another liquid. The tablets consist of more than 90% OptiMSM®. The only filler used is cellulose, which is mainly vegetable. The tablets are easy to break into two pieces. Because they are small, they are easy to take. Our OptiMSM® capsules are 100% vegetable and no fillers are added. They too are small and can be dissolved in a liquid.
