Description
Omega 3 fatty acids and nutrition
The primary food sources of vegan omega 3 fatty acids are walnuts, flaxseed oil, borage oil, and chia seed oil. However, these plant-based sources contain the omega 3 fatty acids ALA and SDA, and not the omega 3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). ALA and SDA must then be converted by the body into the most effective fatty acids EPA and DHA. Unfortunately, the body is not efficient in this conversion, and much of the ALA and SDA fatty acids are lost. Until recently, we relied on fish oil for the important omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. However, due to overfishing from an ecological and ethical standpoint, fish oil is hardly justifiable as a dietary supplement anymore.
Omega 3 fatty acids in a Vegan Omega 3 formula
The cultivation of the plant-based algae Schizochytrium, which produces EPA and DHA itself, is a major step forward as we are no longer dependent on fish oil. The cultivation of the algae takes place under controlled conditions and yields a clean, pure, and plant-based oil rich in the omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. To enhance the quality, we also add the antioxidant vitamin E to our Vegan Omega 3 formula. The added vitamin E protects the fatty acids from natural oxidation over time, ensuring the efficacy of the omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA is not lost.
We would like to explain why our Vegan Omega 3 formula is better than fish oil! The majority of fish populations are heavily overfished in the oceans for the sake of fish oil. Additionally, artificially breeding fatty fish also does not offer a solution. In commercial fish farming, large-scale fishmeal is used as feed, derived from so-called ‘bycatch,’ usually smaller fish species and sea creatures that are commercially less valuable. These sea creatures are also under heavy pressure. Moreover, antibiotics are widely used in commercial fish farming to prevent disease outbreaks. For multiple reasons, fish oil from commercially farmed fish is therefore not recommended as a dietary supplement.
The benefits of Vegan Omega 3 fatty acids
The Vegan Omega 3 fatty acids in the form of algae oil provide a valuable supplement that benefits you in several ways. These health benefits make Vegan omega 3 a valuable addition to your daily diet:
