Vitamin E is one of the most important lipid-soluble antioxidants that penetrates into cell membranes efficiently to protect the cells against free radical-mediated oxidative stress. Most of the nutritional and scientific community still assume that vitamin E is synonymous with tocopherol only. In reality, vitamin E consists of eight chemically distinct natural compounds:
- Four belong to the family of tocopherols (alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-)
- Four belong to the family of tocotrienols (alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-)
In food and food supplements, mainly alpha-tocopherol is used as anti-oxidant. However, recent discoveries show the other three tocopherols may be far more important for human health. The last few years, tocotrienols have gained significant attention among scientists and consumers, due to its unique health benefits which are not associated with the regular tocopherol Vitamin E. Moreover, tocopherols and tocotrienols have a synergetic effect, which makes sense to take all eight of them.

Most important function of vitamin E is, to support the body in it's battle against oxidative damage of cells and tissues. Nowadays we all suffer from unwanted external influences, such as excess of UV-radiation from the sun, and environmental pollution. Thus, the body may need some support.
Allowed health claims for vitamin E are:
- Contributes to the protection of cells against oxidative damage
- Supports the (natural) defence sytem of the body cells
- Helps to protect against the influences of sun light and pollution
Vitamin E is usually not absorbed well. Taking vitamin E capsules with a fatty meal improves the absorption, but only slightly. The manufacturer of the tocotrienols in this product, managed to develop a unique and patented 'self-emulsifying delivery system'.
This system is a mixture of oil and FDA-approved food emulsifiers at optimum ratio that will self-emulsify in the gastrointestinal tract. The emulsion will then form particles of colloidal dimensions, which is a critical action for optimal absorption of tocotrienols. Research with human volunteers has shown, the system increases the absorption of each individual tocotrienol (alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-tocotrienol) by an average of 250%!
But also tocopherols are better absorbed: both tocopherols and tocotrienols are mixed in one capsule, and the self emulsifying delivery system works for all fat-soluble ingredients. Thus, Kala Health Vitamin T8 Complete may rightly be mentioned a 'Bio-enhanced Vitamin E Complex'.

Both tocotrienol and tocopherol are members of Vitamin E family. The molecular structure for both tocotrienol and tocopherol are quite similar in that both of them consist of a chromane ring (with a hydroxyl group that can donate a hydrogen atom to reduce free radicals), and a hydrophobic side chain.
The only difference is in the hydrophobic side chain: tocopherol has a saturated side chain, whereas tocotrienol has an unsaturated side chain. It is believed that the unsaturated side chain (ie: three double bonds) of tocotrienol allows bending or flexibility of the molecule, thus enabling tocotrienol to penetrate into cell membrane efficiently and distribute in a more uniform manner to confer some of the unique biological effects.
As a result, tocotrienol is also known as the Polyunsaturated Vitamin E or Super Vitamin E of the 21st Century.

NATURAL SOURCES OF VITAMIN E?
Vitamin E cannot be produced in the body and has to be obtained through diet or supplementation.Rich sources of tocopherols are vegetarian oils, nuts and seeds, as well in (fat) fish, eggs, whole grains, some vegetables (eg spinach) and fruits.
Tocotrienols are less widespread in the plant kingdom and can only be found in certain sources such as rice, barley, wheat and rye. In nature, palm oil (Elaeis guineensis) is the most abundant source of tocotrienols, containing up to 800mg/kg tocotrienol.
For general wellness, the Adequate Intake (AI) of α-tocopherol is 12 mg/day, whereas the Safe Upper Limit for adults is 300 mg/day.
For tocotrienols there is no AI, but the recommended daily intake is generally considered at 30-50mg/day. In order to attain this recommended level via daily regular diet alone, one has to consume about 80g of palm oil, or 1.5 to 4.0 kg of wheat germ, barley or oats, which is practically impossible. Therefore, the incorporation of tocotrienols through dietary supplements or functional foods and beverages are highly recommended.
There are four commercial sources of tocotrienol: virgin crude palm oil (palm fruits), palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD), rice and annatto seeds. Virgin crude palm oil is the most abundant natural source of tocotrienol. The total tocotrienol ratio in virgin crude palm oil is 78% whereas the tocotrienol from other sources such as PFAD and rice contain a ratio of 70% and 50% respectively. Annatto seeds, although it contains 100% tocotrienol content, it is made up of delta- and gamma-tocotrienol only without any tocopherols.
