Description

Magnesium Bisglycinate Powder

200 mg elemental magnesium per gram. Chelated magnesium bound to glycine: stable under stomach acid, gentle on the stomach and efficiently absorbed in the intestine.

✓ 20% elemental magnesium, 39% more than standard bisglycinate ✓ Gentle on the stomach ✓ 100% plant-based

20% elemental magnesium: why that matters

Not all magnesium in a supplement is directly usable by the body. With every magnesium form, only a portion of the total weight is actually magnesium. The remainder is the molecule to which the magnesium is bound. This usable portion is called “elemental magnesium” and its percentage determines how much active magnesium you actually take in per dose.

Standard bisglycinate: 14.4%. Our powder: 20%.

Magnesium Bisglycinate naturally contains 14.4% elemental magnesium. This means a standard bisglycinate powder delivers only 144 mg of active magnesium per gram. Our powder delivers 200 mg per gram. That is 39% more active magnesium from the same amount of powder.

How? The core of our powder is Magnesium Bisglycinate. To raise the elemental dosage from 14.4% to 20%, a small proportion of magnesium oxide has been added. This is a deliberate formulation choice: the bisglycinate delivers chelated magnesium with high bioavailability, the oxide increases the total elemental dosage without affecting tolerability.

The result: one level scoop (1 gram) delivers 200 mg elemental magnesium, which is 58% of the daily nutrient reference value. With a single dose, you reach more than half of your daily requirement.

Why more and more people need magnesium supplementation

The recommended daily magnesium intake is 300 mg for women and 350 mg for men. Growing evidence shows that nearly two thirds of the population in the Western world does not reach this amount through diet alone.

Nutritional scientist Paul Bergner collected data on the mineral content of foods going back to 1914. His conclusion: the average mineral content in vegetables declined by a factor of 5 between 1914 and 1997. Where spinach, cabbage and lettuce were once rich sources of magnesium, they now contain a fraction of what they delivered a hundred years ago.

The line drops from approximately 400 mg in 1914 to approximately 75 mg in 1997.Average mineral content (calcium, magnesium and iron) in vegetables in the US, 1914–1997. The cause is intensive agriculture: synthetic fertilisers contain only nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. All other minerals, including magnesium, are not replenished and disappear further from the soil with every harvest cycle. In addition, everyday factors such as cooking (magnesium dissolves in cooking water), vitamin D deficiency, certain medications (antacids, some antibiotics and blood pressure medications), alcohol consumption and the natural ageing process further reduce magnesium intake or absorption.

The consequence: even with a varied diet, you can unknowingly develop a structural magnesium deficiency. Targeted magnesium supplementation is therefore not a luxury for many people, but a logical addition to their daily diet.

What makes Magnesium Bisglycinate so effective?

There are dozens of magnesium forms on the market: oxide, citrate, malate, taurate and more. Magnesium Bisglycinate distinguishes itself fundamentally by the way it delivers magnesium to the body.

Chelation: a protected journey through the stomach. In Magnesium Bisglycinate, magnesium ions are bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. This bond (chelation) is exceptionally strong. While with many other magnesium forms (oxide, citrate) the bond breaks down in the stomach under the influence of stomach acid, bisglycinate chelation remains intact. The magnesium arrives protected in the intestine, where it is efficiently absorbed. The direct result: less magnesium is lost in the gastrointestinal tract and more reaches the bloodstream.

Glycine as transport molecule and building block. Glycine is not merely a carrier. It is an amino acid that, due to its small molecular size, guides the magnesium-glycine complex easily through the cells of the intestinal wall. But glycine does more: in the body it is involved in the production of collagen, glutathione (one of the most important antioxidants) and creatine. With Magnesium Bisglycinate, you receive not only magnesium but also a functional amino acid that the body can utilise directly.

Gentle on the stomach. A common complaint with magnesium supplements is gastrointestinal discomfort. Magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate draw moisture into the intestines, which at higher dosages can lead to loose stools or cramps. With bisglycinate this hardly occurs, because the chelation prevents free magnesium from becoming osmotically active in the intestines. This makes it suitable for daily use, even with a sensitive stomach.

Taste & user experience

Magnesium Bisglycinate Powder has a naturally slightly bitter taste. This is inherent to the pure raw material and a sign that no artificial flavourings have been added.

Practical tip: Mix the powder with orange juice, a smoothie or yoghurt to mask the bitter taste. Most users get used to the taste within a few days when taking it with water.

Customer feedback on the efficacy and tolerability is excellent. Users particularly value the gentle effect on the stomach and the noticeable results. Want to know more? Have a look at the product reviews at the bottom of this page.

“Magnesium is one of the most important minerals for the human body. Many people who take magnesium feel better and function better. That shows how essential this mineral is. A great deal of research has been conducted on bisglycinate and it shows that it is well absorbed. Possibly even better than citrate.”

Frequently Asked Questions

In Magnesium Bisglycinate, magnesium ions are bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. This chelation is exceptionally strong and remains intact under the influence of stomach acid. With magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate, the bond can break down in the stomach, causing free magnesium to become osmotically active in the intestines. At higher dosages this can lead to loose stools or cramps. Bisglycinate is not only absorbed more efficiently, but also delivers glycine: an amino acid involved in the production of collagen, glutathione and creatine (Schuette et al., 1994).

Magnesium Bisglycinate naturally consists of 14.4% elemental magnesium. To achieve an effective dosage of 200 mg elemental magnesium per gram, a small proportion of magnesium oxide has been added. This is a deliberate formulation choice: the bisglycinate delivers chelated magnesium with high bioavailability, the oxide increases the total elemental dosage from 144 mg to 200 mg per gram without affecting tolerability.

The EU nutrient reference value for magnesium is 375 mg per day. General dietary guidelines recommend 300 mg for women and 350 mg for men. One scoop of our powder (1 gram) delivers 200 mg elemental magnesium, which is 58% of the nutrient reference value. The remainder can be supplemented through foods such as green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Research shows, however, that nearly two thirds of the Western population does not reach the recommended amount through diet alone (Bergner, 1997).

You can take Magnesium Bisglycinate at any time of day, preferably with a meal for optimal absorption. Mix the powder with water, juice or a smoothie. Many users take it in the evening, but the timing does not affect absorption. The taste is naturally slightly bitter; orange juice or yoghurt masks this effectively.

Yes, this product is 100% plant-based. The amino acid glycine to which the magnesium is bound occurs naturally in plant-based foods. No animal ingredients or excipients have been added. The product is free from yeast, gluten, lactose, preservatives and synthetic flavourings, colourings and fragrances.

Magnesium Bisglycinate is generally well tolerated and rarely causes side effects. It is precisely the chelation that makes this form gentle on the stomach: unlike oxide and citrate, bisglycinate does not draw moisture into the intestines. Take the supplement preferably with a meal and adhere to the recommended dosage. Complaints may occur at very high dosages (above 2,500 mg magnesium per day), but this is far above the recommended intake.

The slightly bitter taste is inherent to pure Magnesium Bisglycinate and is in fact a quality indicator: no artificial flavourings, sweeteners or aromas have been added. Most users get used to the taste within a few days. Mix the powder with orange juice, a smoothie or yoghurt if you wish to mask the taste.

Both are high-quality magnesium products, but with a different profile. Magnesium Bisglycinate Powder delivers 200 mg elemental magnesium per gram in chelated form, bound to glycine. It is designed for targeted magnesium supplementation with high bioavailability. Our Magnesium Complex contains magnesium from seawater concentrate (Aquamin®) and delivers, in addition to magnesium, 70+ other minerals and trace elements in natural ionic form. Which suits you best depends on your goal: targeted magnesium supplementation or a broader mineral spectrum.
