What is magnesium bisglycinate?

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in more than 300 enzymatic processes in the body. Of all magnesium forms, magnesium bisglycinate stands out due to its unique molecular structure: magnesium ions are bound to two glycine molecules. This so-called chelation ensures that the mineral passes through the stomach protected and is efficiently absorbed in the intestine.

Unlike magnesium oxide or magnesium citrate, the bond in magnesium bisglycinate remains intact under the influence of stomach acid. This makes it not only effective, but also gentle on the stomach and well tolerated by most people.

Why is magnesium supplementation important?

Growing evidence confirms that nearly two-thirds of the population in the Western world does not reach the recommended daily amount of magnesium. That is 300 mg per day for women and 350 mg per day for men according to health authorities.

Magnesium occurs naturally in abundance in unprocessed, organic products. However, research shows that the mineral content of foods has dramatically decreased in recent decades. While vegetables such as spinach, tomatoes and lettuce were once rich sources of magnesium, they now contain on average up to five times less of this essential mineral (Bergner, 1997). The reason for this is the rise of intensive agriculture, where agricultural land is selectively fertilized with artificial fertilizers containing a limited number of minerals.

There are several factors that influence magnesium intake:

  • The most common staple foods such as meat, sugar and white flour are limited sources of magnesium
  • When a product is cooked, much of the magnesium is lost
  • Magnesium may be less well absorbed with a vitamin D deficiency
  • Certain medications (such as some antibiotics, antacids and blood pressure medications) can reduce magnesium absorption
  • Alcohol consumption and smoking negatively affect magnesium absorption
  • As we age, magnesium absorption decreases, sometimes by as much as 30%

The result? Even with a healthy diet, you can unknowingly develop a structural magnesium deficiency. And this while magnesium plays a key role in more than 300 enzyme processes in your body. A balanced magnesium supplementation is therefore not a luxury for many people, but a strategic support for their daily health.

Our product developer speaks

“Magnesium is one of the most important minerals for the human body. Many people who take magnesium feel better and function better. This shows how essential this mineral is. A lot of research has been done on bisglycinate and it shows that it is well absorbed. Possibly even better than citrate.”

100 mg elemental magnesium per tablet

Not all magnesium in a supplement is directly usable by the body. The percentage of “elemental magnesium” indicates how much pure, active magnesium is actually available. Our 100 mg tablets contain 750 mg magnesium bisglycinate, of which 100 mg is elemental magnesium. This is 26% of the daily reference intake.

Why a lower dosage?

The 100 mg tablets are ideal for those who want to build up gradually, need a lower maintenance dose, or want to combine magnesium with other supplements. Thanks to the score line, you can also split the tablet in half for an even lower dosage of 50 mg.

Formula with taurine and black pepper extract

Our Magnesium Bisglycinate Tablets 100 mg contain two additional ingredients besides magnesium:

Taurine (180 mg per tablet): Taurine is an amino acid that occurs naturally in the body. It is often combined with magnesium in supplement formulas.

Black pepper extract (1 mg per tablet): Black pepper extract (Piper nigrum) is added to support the absorption of nutrients.

Bioavailability: not all magnesium is equal

In all magnesium supplements on the market, magnesium is combined with another substance. Each combined form delivers different amounts of elemental magnesium. The amount of magnesium and the bioavailability influence what the body can actually absorb.

There are two groups of magnesium compounds: organic and inorganic. Organic forms, such as magnesium bisglycinate, are bound to amino acids or organic acids. Inorganic forms, such as magnesium oxide, are salts or minerals.

Magnesium bisglycinate is a so-called amino acid chelated form. In this form, the magnesium is bound to the amino acid glycine. This ensures high water solubility and makes it easier for the body to actively absorb the mineral through the intestines, without it being quickly excreted. Studies have shown that this type of compound is often better absorbed than inorganic forms such as magnesium oxide or carbonate (Walker et al., 2003).

The problem with cheap magnesium forms: Many cheap magnesium supplements contain magnesium oxide. On paper, this has the highest elemental magnesium content (60%), but that means little if it dissolves poorly and is barely absorbed. Research shows that less than 4% of magnesium from oxide actually becomes available to the body. This means that 500 mg magnesium oxide sometimes delivers less than 100 mg bisglycinate (Firoz & Graber, 2001).

Why choose magnesium bisglycinate?

There are dozens of magnesium forms on the market: oxide, citrate, malate, taurate, and more. Magnesium bisglycinate stands out on three important points:

Stable bond under stomach acid: With many magnesium compounds, the bond splits in the stomach, meaning magnesium does not always reach its intended destination in the body. The chelation of bisglycinate is exceptionally strong and remains intact, allowing the mineral to be absorbed in its entirety.

Glycine as a carrier: The amino acid glycine functions as a transport molecule. Due to its small molecular size, the complex can easily pass through the cells of the intestinal wall to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

Gentle on the stomach: Many people experience stomach discomfort with magnesium supplements. Bisglycinate is known as one of the mildest forms and is well tolerated, even with sensitive stomachs.

User experience

The tablets are oval in shape, have a transparent coating and feature a score line. This makes them easy to swallow and allows you to split them in half for a lower dosage. Take one to two tablets per day, preferably with a meal.

Customer feedback on the tolerability of our Magnesium Bisglycinate Tablets is excellent. Users particularly appreciate the gentle effect on the stomach and the flexibility of the lower dosage.
