Why we developed liposomal magnesium

Walk into any drugstore and you’ll find dozens of magnesium supplements. Large bottles, low prices, impressive percentages on the label: 300%, 500%, sometimes even 800% of the reference intake. At first glance, a good deal. But as product developers, we know: those numbers don’t tell the whole story.

The problem lies in the form. Most cheap supplements use magnesium oxide. On paper, it contains 60% elemental magnesium, more than any other form. But research shows that your body only absorbs a fraction of it. The vast majority leaves your body unused.

That’s why manufacturers opt for overdosing. The reasoning: if you provide 500% and 10% is absorbed, you still get 50%. But that’s treating symptoms, not solving the problem. We asked ourselves: what if we tackle the absorption problem at its source?

Two technologies, one logical combination

Our answer combines two proven approaches: the most absorbable magnesium form and real liposomal technology.

Magnesium bisglycinate is an organic chelate form where magnesium is bound to two glycine molecules. Unlike inorganic forms such as oxide, bisglycinate is absorbed via amino acid transporters in the intestine. A different route that doesn’t compete with other minerals and isn’t dependent on stomach acid.

Liposomal encapsulation adds an extra dimension. By packaging the bisglycinate in microscopically small phospholipid spheres, we protect it during passage through the digestive tract. These liposomes are composed of phosphatidylcholine from sunflower, structurally similar to your own cell membranes.

The result: a magnesium supplement where every milligram adds value. No compensation through overdosing, but smart formulation.

Illustration of liposomal absorption: the liposome fuses with the intestinal wall. The diagram shows a liposome containing active ingredients merging with the cell membrane of the intestinal wall, delivering the active substances directly into the cell. Unprotected ingredients (red crosses) are not absorbed.

Smarter dosing

Consumers have become accustomed to extreme percentages on labels. But more isn’t better when most of it leaves your body without effect. With liposomal bisglycinate, a larger portion of the ingested dose actually reaches your cells. That’s why this product contains 30% RI per capsule. Not to save on ingredients, but because it’s sufficient when absorption is optimal. The rest of your daily requirement comes from food, exactly as it should.

Why 30% RI per capsule is just right

The reference intake for magnesium is 375 mg per day. One capsule provides 116 mg (30% RI), two capsules 232 mg (62% RI). Isn’t that too little?

No, and here’s why: Magnesium is found in many foods: nuts, seeds, leafy greens, whole grains, legumes. A reasonably varied diet already provides 150-250 mg per day. Supplementation is meant to fill the gap, not to cover your entire requirement.

Moreover, with minerals: taking more doesn’t mean absorbing more. Your body has a saturation point. Everything above that is excreted. With cheap magnesium forms, manufacturers compensate for poor absorption with high dosages. We solve the absorption problem, making lower dosages more effective. Cheap is expensive in the long run. You’re not paying for what’s on the label, but for what your body can actually use.

The difference in practice:

Approach Typical dosage Reality
Cheap magnesium oxide 400-500 mg (100%+ RI) Low absorption, largely unused
Liposomal bisglycinate 116-232 mg (30-62% RI) Optimal absorption, efficiently utilised

What do we mean by real liposomes?

The term “liposomal” has become popular in the supplement world. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean every product that calls itself liposomal actually contains liposomes. Many products use cheap phospholipids that clump together instead of forming true liposomal structures. Others import ready-made powders from abroad without verification of actual liposome formation.

We produce our liposomal magnesium in our own FSSC 22000-certified factory in the Netherlands. No imports, and therefore no question marks about what’s in the capsule. From raw material to finished product: everything under our own roof, under direct supervision of our quality team.

Test it yourself: the water test

Want to know if a liposomal product is real? Stir some powder into a glass of water. Real dry liposomes form a clear, homogeneous solution within seconds. Fake liposomal products remain cloudy or clump together. We invite you to test our capsules.

The water test: discover if your liposomal supplement is truly liposomal. Illustration of two glasses of water. Left: real liposomes, clear and homogeneously dissolved within seconds. Right: fake liposomal, floating on the surface or sediment at the bottom. Test it yourself by stirring powder from a capsule into water.

Why magnesium is essential

Magnesium is involved in more than 300 enzymatic processes in your body. Unlike vitamins, which your body can partly produce or convert itself, every milligram of magnesium must come from food or supplementation. It’s a building block your body cannot manufacture.

Yet an estimated two-thirds of the Western population doesn’t get enough magnesium. The causes are diverse: intensive agriculture has reduced mineral content in vegetables, processed food contains little magnesium, and factors such as stress, medication use and alcohol increase the need or reduce absorption.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has confirmed that magnesium contributes to:

  • ✓ Energy: Magnesium contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism
  • ✓ Fatigue: Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
  • ✓ Muscles: Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function
  • ✓ Nervous system: Magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system
  • ✓ Psychological function: Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function
  • ✓ Bones and teeth: Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth
  • ✓ Cell division: Magnesium has a role in the process of cell division

Background information

Why is magnesium supplementation important?

Growing evidence confirms that nearly two-thirds of the population in the Western world does not reach the recommended daily amount of magnesium. That is 300 mg per day for women and 350 mg per day for men according to health authorities.

Magnesium occurs naturally in abundance in unprocessed, organic products. However, research shows that the mineral content of foods has dramatically decreased in recent decades. While vegetables such as spinach, tomatoes and lettuce were once rich sources of magnesium, they now contain on average up to five times less of this essential mineral (Bergner, 1997). The reason for this is the rise of intensive agriculture, where agricultural land is selectively fertilized with artificial fertilizers containing a limited number of minerals.

There are several factors that influence magnesium intake:

  • The most common staple foods such as meat, sugar and white flour are limited sources of magnesium
  • When a product is cooked, much of the magnesium is lost
  • Magnesium may be less well absorbed with a vitamin D deficiency
  • Certain medications (such as some antibiotics, antacids and blood pressure medications) can reduce magnesium absorption
  • Alcohol consumption and smoking negatively affect magnesium absorption
  • As we age, magnesium absorption decreases, sometimes by as much as 30%

The result? Even with a healthy diet, you can unknowingly develop a structural magnesium deficiency. And this while magnesium plays a key role in more than 300 enzyme processes in your body. A balanced magnesium supplementation is therefore not a luxury for many people, but a strategic support for their daily health.

FAQ

Because 30% RI with optimal absorption is more effective than 300% RI with poor absorption. By combining magnesium bisglycinate with real liposomal technology, a much larger portion of the ingested dose is actually utilised. The rest of your daily magnesium requirement comes from food, exactly as it should be. Supplementation is addition, not replacement.
