Wat is iron?

Iron is a mineral the body cannot produce itself, so it has to come from food or supplements. But iron is a stubborn mineral: your body only actually absorbs part of what you take in through food or a supplement, and how much depends heavily on what else is on your plate. Vitamin C is known to enhance iron absorption from food. Phytates (from grains and legumes), tannins (from tea and coffee) and calcium are considered inhibitors: they can reduce the absorption of iron from the same meal. That’s why it’s often recommended to take iron supplements separately from coffee, tea or calcium-rich products.

That makes the choice of iron form, and how it is processed, relevant: not every iron compound interacts with these inhibitors in the same way, and not every form is tolerated equally well.

The differences between iron sulfate, iron bisglycinate, and liposomal iron

Iron sulphate is one of the oldest and most researched iron forms used in food supplements. It is a compound of divalent iron (Fe²⁺) with a sulphate group, an ionic form that has been used in clinical research on iron intake for decades. In unprotected form, however, this iron sulphate can sometimes release too early as a free Fe²⁺ ion in the gastrointestinal tract, which is often associated with complaints in a portion of users (Tolkien et al., 2015).

Iron bisglycinate is an iron molecule bound to two glycine molecules. This forms a chelate, which is often described as better tolerated than simple, uncoated iron salts (Cancelo-Hidalgo et al., 2013).

At Kala Health, we wanted to use the well-researched iron sulphate compound, while limiting the risk of gastrointestinal complaints as much as possible. That’s why we encapsulate our iron sulphate in liposomes made of phospholipids: a layer intended to shield the iron from the gastrointestinal tract until it is expected to be absorbed intact, thereby reducing interaction with dietary inhibitors such as calcium and tannins.

Why buy from Kala Health?

We develop our formulations in-house, from raw material to finished product. Everything is produced under strict quality control at our own facility in Oldenzaal. By eliminating the need for intermediaries or external manufacturers, we can offer a price that other providers of comparable quality cannot match: on average, 50% cheaper than similar liposomal iron supplements of comparable quality.

When would you choose Liposomal Iron Sulphate?

This product is worth considering for people who:

  • Deliberately choose iron sulfate as a compound, rather than a chelated form such as iron bisglycinate
  • Have previously experienced stomach complaints with standard, uncoated iron sulfate and want to try an encapsulated variant
  • Are consciously mindful of their iron intake because of a physically active lifestyle
  • Value Dutch manufacturing, an in-house facility and independent lab testing

What does iron contribute to in your body?

The following EFSA-approved claims apply to iron:

  • Iron contributes to normal cognitive function
  • Iron contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism
  • Iron contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin
  • Iron contributes to normal oxygen transport in the body
  • Iron contributes to the normal function of the immune system
  • Iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
  • Iron has a role in the process of cell division

Use & dosage

Recommended use

Recommended use

Daily dosage: Take 1 capsule per day with a glass of water, or orange juiste. Preferably 30-60 minutes before your breakfast and coffee/tea. Iron absorption is inhibited by calcium (yoghurt, milk) and tannins (tea, coffee). The liposomes will prevent some of that interaction, but it’s still best to take the capsule separately from these products.

Do not exceed the recommended daily amount. Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Mandatory statement: A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Safety: Consult a specialist before using this supplement in the event of pregnancy, breastfeeding, medication use or illness.

Storage advice

Storage: Store at room temperature and out of reach of children. Proper storage contributes to the shelf life of the product. Do not freeze.

Liposomal iron is iron sulfate encapsulated in liposomes: microscopic vesicles made of phospholipids, the same building blocks as your cell membranes. This coating is intended to shield the iron from the gastrointestinal tract until it is expected to be absorbed intact, thereby reducing interaction with dietary inhibitors such as calcium and tannins.

It's best to take liposomal iron separately from coffee, tea and calcium-rich products such as milk or yoghurt, since tannins and calcium can inhibit iron absorption. An interval of roughly 30 to 60 minutes before a meal containing these products is commonly recommended. Also stick to the dosage stated on the packaging.

The mechanism behind that effect takes place in the gut lumen: vitamin C reduces ferric iron (Fe³⁺) to the more absorbable ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) and keeps free iron soluble against inhibitors such as phytates and tannins, so the transport protein DMT1 can absorb it. That is exactly the route liposomal encapsulation is designed to bypass: the iron is shielded from the gut lumen until it is expected to be absorbed intact. For the portion of iron that actually remains encapsulated, vitamin C therefore has little to act on. That's why we chose not to add vitamin C to this formulation: we don't want to add an ingredient whose benefit for this specific technology hasn't been demonstrated. Taking a separate vitamin C supplement alongside it is not harmful, but there is no demonstrated benefit for this formulation.

Individual experiences with liposomal iron naturally vary and can't be generalised. How well an iron form is tolerated also differs from person to person. However, for liposomal iron as a formulation principle, a few smaller studies suggest better tolerability compared to unprotected iron sulfate.

Both are widely used forms of iron, each with its own profile. Iron sulphate is the most researched and most affordable form; iron bisglycinate is a chelate that is often described in the literature as better tolerated than uncoated iron sulphate. This product combines the classic iron sulphate compound with liposomal encapsulation.

This product is not intended to diagnose, prevent or treat iron deficiency or anaemia. Only a blood test by a doctor, including ferritin and haemoglobin levels, can establish whether this is the case. If you suspect a deficiency, please contact your doctor.
