The combination of MSM, Glucosamine, Chondroitin and Vitamin C
MSM GC combines the power of four carefully selected ingredients: MSM, glucosamine, chondroitin and vitamin C. This formula has been specially developed by Kala Health’s product developers to support natural mobility. What makes MSM GC unique is that only high-quality, patented branded ingredients are used: OptiMSM®, NaturGlux®, ChondroPure® and Ester-C®.
This choice for quality is not arbitrary. Extensive scientific research has been conducted on MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin. This research shows that the purity of the ingredients used has a greater impact on results than the specific form. Contaminated or inferior ingredients simply do not deliver the same results as pharmaceutical-grade ingredients. That is why Kala Health selects only branded ingredients that have been extensively tested for both the presence of pure active substances and the absence of contaminants.
The formula contains vitamin C in the form of Ester-C®, which contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage and bones. This makes MSM GC a complete formula for anyone who wants to optimally support their body with an active lifestyle.
“Purity determines effectiveness”
“Extensive scientific research has been conducted on glucosamine and chondroitin. What this shows: the purity of ingredients is decisive for effectiveness. Inferior raw materials simply do not deliver the same results. That is why we exclusively use patented branded ingredients that we extensively test, both for the presence of pure active substances and the absence of contaminants.”
– Paul Klein Breteler, founder of Kala Health
The four branded ingredients explained
OptiMSM® – The purest form of MSM
OptiMSM® is the purest form of MSM on the market. MSM is a very small, light molecule, which makes it easily absorbed by the body. MSM is the form in which sulphur naturally occurs in all living organisms and in which it is biologically active. In nature, MSM is found in fruits, vegetables and in the milk of grazing cows. Each MSM GC tablet contains 400 mg OptiMSM®.
NaturGlux® – Plant-based glucosamine
Glucosamine is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is also found in the shells of shellfish such as shrimp, crabs and lobsters. These shells contain chitin, a polysaccharide that can be converted into glucosamine. However, NaturGlux® glucosamine is of plant origin, produced by fermentation of corn. This makes the formula free from common shellfish allergens, an important benefit for people with allergies. Each tablet contains 250 mg NaturGlux® glucosamine HCl, which corresponds to 209 mg elemental glucosamine.
ChondroPure® – Optimal molecular size for absorption
Chondroitin is found in cartilage-rich foods, particularly from animals such as cattle, pigs and sharks. The cartilage of these animals contains chondroitin sulphate, a compound that is extracted for use in supplements. ChondroPure® chondroitin is sourced from bovine trachea. The molecules are relatively small (< 10,000 daltons), which is important for good absorption. Each tablet contains 225 mg ChondroPure® chondroitin sulphate.
Ester-C® – Stomach-friendly vitamin C
The MSM GC formula deliberately uses the vitamin C form called Ester-C® (calcium ascorbate). This patented form of vitamin C is characterised by better absorption and stomach-friendliness compared to traditional ascorbic acid. Each tablet contains 60 mg Ester-C®, which corresponds to 75% of the reference intake.
The MSM GC Product Line: Three formulas for natural mobility
The Kala Health product line for natural mobility consists of three different formulas, each with its own combination of high-quality branded ingredients. MSM GC tablets form the foundation of this line: a powerful combination of MSM, glucosamine, chondroitin and vitamin C in tablet form.
For those looking for a more comprehensive formula, Kala Health also offers MSM GC Plus capsules, with added undenatured type II collagen (Collavant®) and seawater concentrate (Aquamin®). Additionally, there is MSM GC Vegan, with plant-based chondroitin (MythoCondro®) instead of animal-derived chondroitin, making this formula fully suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

What is MSM?
MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane, an organically bound form of sulphur. It is a natural substance that occurs naturally in various foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables. Remarkably, breast milk is the richest natural source of MSM. As we age, the amount of MSM in the human body decreases.
MSM is a very small, light molecule. This makes MSM easy for the body to absorb. MSM is the form in which sulphur naturally occurs in all living organisms and in which it is biologically active. However, through food processing, heating and storage, the MSM content in food decreases rapidly, which is why supplementation may be interesting for many people.
The recommended dosage for most people varies between 2 and 8 grams of MSM per day, depending on individual needs and goals.
What is Glucosamine and which form is best?
Glucosamine is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. Glucosamine as a molecule is inherently unstable and is converted into a ‘salt’ by binding with another molecule. The most common glucosamine salts on the market are:
- Glucosamine sulphate.2KCl
- Glucosamine sulphate.NaCl
- Glucosamine HCl
There is some uncertainty about which of these three forms is most effective. However, many scientists agree that the specific form of the salt should not be of great importance. In the acidic environment of the stomach, the salt breaks down into a glucosamine molecule and a residual group. The glucosamine molecule is then absorbed in the intestine, while the remaining molecule completely disappears among the numerous hydrochloric acid molecules (-HCl) in the gastric juice.
The purity of Glucosamine is more important than the form
There are ‘experts’ who claim that glucosamine sulphate.NaCl is the only scientifically proven effective form of glucosamine. However, it is now known that the proven effectiveness depends more on purity than on the specific form of glucosamine. The glucosamine sulphate.NaCl used in various renowned studies was a patented, pharmaceutical-grade product. Studies with other forms of glucosamine (glucosamine sulphate.2KCl and glucosamine HCl) show that the quality of the glucosamine used may have had a greater influence on research results than the form of glucosamine (sulphate versus HCl).
The dosing protocol of Glucosamine
Furthermore, the intake protocols in the studies were not uniform. Most studies used an intake schedule of three times daily 500 mg, while successful glucosamine sulphate.NaCl studies were conducted with an intake of 1500 mg once daily. Different intake patterns can lead to different pharmacokinetic profiles of glucosamine in the body, making comparison of such studies difficult.
Scientific research on bioavailability
Aghazadeh et al. (2011) orally administered rats an equal dose of glucosamine of both forms. The glucosamine sulphate.NaCl used was a patented, pharmaceutical-grade product from Rottapharm, while the glucosamine HCl used was high-quality and plant-based. The results showed that the change in plasma concentration of glucosamine over time was virtually identical.
The same authors also examined the excretion of glucosamine in the urine of four human volunteers after oral intake of 1500 mg glucosamine sulphate.NaCl (Rottapharm) or high-quality glucosamine HCl. The results showed that the excretion of both forms was almost identical. The authors concluded that both the absorption and excretion of the glucosamine sulphate.NaCl and glucosamine HCl used are identical and show no difference in bioavailability for the body.
Glucosamine HCl contains more elemental glucosamine
Since differences in bioavailability are excluded, it becomes interesting to look at the economic aspects. A sulphate group has considerably more weight than an HCl group. This becomes clear in the percentage of elemental glucosamine:
| Glucosamine form | Elemental glucosamine |
|---|---|
| Glucosamine sulphate.2KCl | 58% |
| Glucosamine sulphate.NaCl | 62% |
| Glucosamine HCl (NaturGlux®) | 82% |
In other words: to consume a comparable amount of elemental glucosamine, you would need to take 41% and 32% more glucosamine sulphate.2KCl and glucosamine sulphate.NaCl respectively than glucosamine HCl.
Conclusions about glucosamine forms
- Research shows that the bioavailability of glucosamine HCl and glucosamine sulphate.NaCl is equivalent. Glucosamine HCl contains 32% more elemental glucosamine and is also available from a plant-based source (through fermentation of corn dextrose).
- A plant-based source contains no animal proteins.
- Plant-based glucosamine HCl is preferable to glucosamine sulphate.NaCl, provided both are of identical (pharmaceutical) quality.
- The third commonly used form is glucosamine sulphate.2KCl. Due to the relatively low amount of elemental glucosamine and often questionable quality, this is the least preferred form.
What is Chondroitin?
Chondroitin, more precisely chondroitin sulphates, consist of elongated chains of interconnected molecules of galactosamine sulphate and glucuronic acid. They form the essential chains of glycosaminoglycans (GAG).
For a long time, it was thought that chondroitin molecules were too large to be absorbed by the body, which meant that taking them was considered pointless. Recently, however, this view has been nuanced, as small chondroitin molecules are indeed absorbed intact by the body.
Where does Chondroitin come from?
Chondroitin is mainly commercially obtained from animal cartilage, sourced from cattle. The effectiveness of chondroitin is strongly linked to its concentration and quality. Due to the costliness of this substance, it is often ‘diluted’. Many cheap ‘chondroitin’ preparations on the market contain only a limited percentage of actual chondroitin.
Why do we choose ChondroPure®?
A high-quality preparation guarantees a minimum chondroitin concentration of 90%. An additional problem with many chondroitin products is that large chondroitin molecules are barely absorbed by the body, making the intake of such preparations of little value.
Clinical studies have shown that only small molecules (molecular weight < 25,000 daltons) can be well absorbed by the body. ChondroPure® chondroitin is sourced from bovine trachea and is characterised by particularly small molecules (< 10,000 daltons) – well below the threshold for optimal absorption.
Benefits of MSM GC: The role of Vitamin C
MSM GC contains vitamin C in the form of Ester-C®. Although extensive scientific research has been conducted on MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin, the European Union has not (yet) approved health claims for these substances. Vitamin C is the only ingredient in this formula for which the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has approved health claims:
- ✓ Cartilage: Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage
- ✓ Bones: Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of bones
- ✓ Cell protection: Vitamin C helps protect cells from oxidative stress
- ✓ Energy: Vitamin C contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism
- ✓ Immune system: Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system
- ✓ Fatigue: Vitamin C contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
- ✓ Nervous system: Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the nervous system
One MSM GC tablet contains 60 mg of vitamin C, which corresponds to 75% of the reference intake. At the recommended dosage of 2 tablets per day, 150% of the daily reference intake is achieved.
Natural food sources
MSM in food
MSM occurs naturally in fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and in the milk of grazing cows. Breast milk is the richest natural source of MSM. However, through food processing, heating and storage, the MSM content in food decreases rapidly.
Glucosamine in food
Glucosamine does not occur directly in the food we eat daily. The human body produces glucosamine itself. Traditionally, glucosamine for supplements is obtained from the shells of shellfish, but NaturGlux® is produced by fermentation of plant-based corn.
Chondroitin in food
Chondroitin is found in cartilage-rich foods, particularly from animals such as cattle, pigs and sharks. Eating cartilage (for example from chicken bones or in bone broth) provides small amounts of chondroitin. However, the concentrations are much lower than in concentrated supplements.
