Organically certified Cordyceps powder: traditional power from the Himalayas

Our Cordyceps Organic Powder contains 100% organically produced Cordyceps sinensis mycelium (Paecilomyces hepiali). This legendary mushroom, also known as the “caterpillar mushroom” or “winter worm mushroom”, is fermented under strictly controlled organic conditions on organic bean cake powder. The final product is extensively tested and packaged in our own FSSC 22000-certified factory in the Netherlands.

Cordyceps has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine and Tibetan practices, particularly in high-altitude areas of the Himalayas. With a growing number of scientific studies, more is becoming known about the remarkable properties of this mushroom, which is rich in polysaccharides, mannitol and adenosine.

What is Cordyceps sinensis?

Cordyceps sinensis is a parasitic mushroom that naturally occurs in the high-altitude areas of the Tibetan plateau and the Himalayas, at altitudes of 3000-5000 meters. In the wild, Cordyceps grows on caterpillars, with the mycelium parasitizing the caterpillar and eventually forming a fruiting body. This wild Cordyceps is extremely rare and expensive, which is why modern fermentation techniques have been developed to cultivate the mushroom organically.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Cordyceps has been used as a tonic for more than 1500 years and is valued for its unique composition of bioactive compounds. Today, Cordyceps is available as a dietary supplement in the form of mycelium powders and extracts.

Why mycelium through fermentation?

Our Cordyceps powder is produced through a controlled fermentation process, in which the mycelium of Cordyceps sinensis (Paecilomyces hepiali) is cultivated on organic bean cake powder as substrate. This process takes place in a fermentation tank under strict organic conditions, where temperature, humidity and nutrients are precisely controlled.

The advantage of this method is that the mycelium is richer in certain bioactive compounds than wild Cordyceps, and that production is completely traceable and free from contaminants. The final product is identified through PCR DNA strain identification to guarantee authenticity.

Our Cordyceps powder contains minimum 5% polysaccharides, 8% mannitol and 0.25% adenosine, tested according to international standards. This makes it a high-quality product with a guaranteed concentration of bioactive components.

Production & Quality: Organic & Controlled

Each package of Cordyceps Organic Powder is produced under strict organic certification (EU: CN-BIO-141 and NL-BIO-01). The mycelium is fermented in a controlled environment, using organic bean cake powder as substrate. This guarantees that no pesticides, artificial fertilizers or genetically modified organisms are used.

After fermentation, the mycelium is dried and processed into a fine powder (99% through 100 mesh sieve), which is then packaged in our FSSC 22000-certified factory in the Netherlands. From raw material analysis to final packaging: everything happens under the direct supervision of our quality team.

Tested for Purity & Safety

At Kala Health we make no compromises on quality. That’s why we have each batch of Cordyceps Organic Powder extensively tested by an independent laboratory before it leaves our factory. We check five crucial points:

  • Authenticity through DNA analysis: PCR DNA strain identification confirms that the product contains authentic Paecilomyces hepiali (Cordyceps sinensis)
  • Free from pesticides: extensive screening for more than 500 pesticides according to European standards
  • Free from heavy metals: such as lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury remain far below European safety limits
  • Free from mycotoxins and PCBs: no detectable levels of harmful fungal toxins or dioxins
  • Standardized for active compounds: minimum 5% polysaccharides, 8% mannitol and 0.25% adenosine

Traditional Use of Cordyceps

Cordyceps sinensis has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and Tibetan practices for more than 1500 years. In the wild, this rare mushroom grows at altitudes of 3000-5000 meters in the Himalayas, where local populations traditionally harvested it and used it as a tonic. In traditional practice, Cordyceps was highly valued and reserved for imperial families and the elite.

Today, Cordyceps is being scientifically researched, with a growing number of studies on the composition and properties of this remarkable mushroom. The focus is primarily on the polysaccharides, mannitol, adenosine and other bioactive components that naturally occur in Cordyceps.

FAQ

Cordyceps sinensis is unique because in the wild, the mycelium (the caterpillar-parasitizing phase) is naturally rich in bioactive substances such as mannitol and adenosine. Our Cordyceps powder is a mycelium biomass that is organically fermented on organic substrate, preserving the traditional composition. This differs from fruiting body extracts of other mushrooms. Scientific research has shown that Cordyceps mycelium contains high-quality concentrations of polysaccharides, mannitol, and adenosine. Our product is additionally authenticated via PCR DNA analysis to confirm the identity of Paecilomyces hepiali (Cordyceps sinensis).

Cordyceps is fermented on a substrate, and the quality of this substrate determines the purity of the final product. Organic certification guarantees that the fermentation process takes place on organic bean cake powder, without synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms. Our Cordyceps Organic Powder is EU organically certified (CN-BIO-141 and NL-BIO-01) and is additionally tested for more than 500 different pesticides, mycotoxins, and PCBs. This makes the difference between a pure product and a product that may contain contaminants.

Cordyceps powder dissolves best in warm liquids. The recommended dosage is 1-2 grams (approximately 1 level teaspoon) per day. Mix the powder with warm water, tea, coffee, smoothies, or plant-based milk. For optimal mixing, you can first add a small amount of warm liquid to the powder and stir until a smooth paste forms, then add the rest of the liquid. Many users take Cordyceps in the morning in combination with other beverages.

Cordyceps contains three important bioactive components that are scientifically studied. Polysaccharides (≥5%) are complex carbohydrates that naturally occur in mushrooms and are tested via spectrophotometry. Mannitol (≥8%) is a natural sugar alcohol that is characteristic of Cordyceps and is measured via titration. Adenosine (≥0.25%) is a nucleoside that is tested via HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography). These three markers are used to determine the quality and authenticity of Cordyceps.

Cordyceps powder can in principle be combined with other food supplements. However, since mushrooms contain bioactive substances, it is advisable to consult a doctor or therapist first when using medications – especially blood thinners, diabetes medication, immunosuppressants, or blood pressure medications. Also, for pregnancy, breastfeeding, or medical conditions, we recommend consulting an expert before use. For personal advice, please contact us at (+31) 070-345-0290.

When stored properly, Cordyceps Organic Powder is shelf-stable for at least 2 years (see package for exact date). Store the powder in a dry, cool place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Close the package tightly after use to keep out moisture and air. Due to the low moisture content (≤9%) and absence of fillers, the powder remains stable without refrigeration. If exposed to moisture, the powder may clump, but this does not affect quality.
