What is resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a polyphenol, a group of natural compounds produced by plants in response to stress, fungal infections, or ultraviolet radiation. It is a defence compound of the plant itself and is found in the highest concentrations in grape skins, mulberries, peanuts, and the root of Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum).

Kala uses only trans-resveratrol, the biologically active and most researched form of resveratrol, extracted from the root of Polygonum cuspidatum.

The French Paradox

Interest in resveratrol grew sharply in the 1990s following publications on what researchers called the ‘French paradox’: the observation that the French population showed relatively low rates of certain conditions, despite a diet rich in saturated fat. Epidemiologists pointed to France’s relatively high consumption of red wine as a possible explanatory factor.

Red wine contains resveratrol, derived from the grape skins that remain in contact with the juice during fermentation. That observation set researchers worldwide on the trail of resveratrol as a subject of study. Thousands of scientific publications on the compound have appeared since.

For context: the amount of resveratrol in a glass of red wine is limited, averaging 1 to 2 mg per glass, depending on the grape variety and wine region. Supplementation offers a far more consistent and higher dose than is achievable through diet.

Resveratrol as a supplement

Resveratrol is a compound that is barely obtained in meaningful amounts through diet. Grape skins, peanuts, and red wine contain resveratrol, but the concentrations are low and inconsistent. Supplementation is the only way to take a standardised, controllable dose.

Resveratrol is widely used around the world as a dietary supplement.

By people who are mindful of healthy ageing, as well as by people looking to supplement their polyphenol intake.

Why liposomal?

Resveratrol is broken down and converted rapidly in the gastrointestinal tract, which limits the bioavailability of standard resveratrol supplements. Research shows that a large proportion of orally ingested resveratrol never reaches the blood as the active compound.

Kala’s Liposomal Resveratrol is built using Actisomes technology: a double layer surrounding the resveratrol that supports absorption. The primary layer consists of GMO-free sunflower lecithin, which serves as a carrier for the resveratrol. Around this lies a secondary layer of carrageenan, gum arabic, and modified food starch. Together, these layers provide stability for the liposomes and contribute to better absorption than standard resveratrol capsules or tablets.

In liposomal resveratrol, the active compound is enclosed in liposomes, microscopically small spheres made up of phospholipids. This structure protects the resveratrol from breakdown in the stomach and makes it easier for the compound to pass through the intestinal wall.

Who is this product for?

Liposomal Resveratrol is developed for people who:

  • Are already familiar with resveratrol and are looking for a better-absorbed form than standard capsules or tablets
  • Are mindful of the quality of their dietary supplements and pay attention to the source material and origin
  • Want to supplement their polyphenol intake
  • Are looking for a pure, plant-based supplement free of animal-derived ingredients

Resveratrol is not a medicine and no medical claims are made in connection with it. It is a dietary supplement used to complement a varied diet.

FAQ

Resveratrol exists in two spatial forms. Trans-resveratrol is the biologically active form used in scientific research. Cis-resveratrol is a less stable variant with lower biological activity. Kala uses exclusively trans-resveratrol as its source material.

Polygonum cuspidatum naturally contains one of the highest concentrations of resveratrol of any plant. This makes it the most efficient and sustainable source material for standardised resveratrol extracts with a high purity. Grape skins contain resveratrol at much lower and less consistent concentrations.

On average 1 to 2 mg per glass, depending on the grape variety and wine region. One capsule of Kala's Liposomal Resveratrol contains 280 mg trans-resveratrol, in a liposomal form.

Yes. Both the capsule shell (HPMC) and all other ingredients are plant-based. The product contains no soy or animal-derived lecithin.

When in doubt, always consult a doctor or pharmacist, especially if you are taking medication.
