✓ Balanced magnesium-calcium ratio ✓ 100% natural, 100% vegan ✓ 60 or 180 plant-based capsules per jar

Why take magnesium and calcium together?

Magnesium and calcium are the two minerals most commonly taken as supplements, and for good reason. They are involved in a large number of processes in the body, from muscle function and bone maintenance to energy metabolism and the nervous system. But they do not operate independently of each other. Magnesium and calcium influence one another: magnesium plays a role in the absorption and utilisation of calcium by the body, among other things. Anyone looking to supplement calcium would be wise to include magnesium as well, and vice versa.

At Kala Health, this product was developed by founder Paul Klein Breteler based on precisely that insight. Not combining two separate minerals in synthetic form, but building a formula in which magnesium and calcium are present in a natural, balanced ratio. Supplemented with the full spectrum of 70+ minerals and trace elements naturally found in marine sources.

Why minerals are so important as a supplement

The reason we at Kala Health recommend mineral supplementation first has to do with a trend that has been ongoing for decades. Research shows that the mineral content in our food has been steadily declining since the 1940s. The causes are well known: intensive agriculture, depleted soils, faster cultivation cycles and increased food processing. What once provided sufficient minerals through a varied diet increasingly falls short today.

Graph showing the decline in the average mineral content of vegetables in the United States from 1914 to 1997. The line decreases from approximately 400 mg in 1914 to approximately 75 mg in 1997, a fivefold decrease.

Source: Paul Bergner, The Healing Power of Minerals (1997). The mineral content in vegetables and fruit has been declining for decades due to intensive agriculture and soil depletion. Magnesium and calcium are among the minerals that have decreased the most.

The nutrition scientist Paul Bergner documented this decline in his work The Healing Power of Minerals. His analysis showed that the levels of calcium, magnesium, iron and other minerals in vegetables and fruit had decreased by as much as tens of percent over a period of 60 years. This means that even people who consciously eat healthily do not always obtain the minerals their body needs through food alone.

Minerals work as a system, not as individuals

A common mistake in supplementation is taking one or two isolated minerals in high doses. Magnesium and calcium do not stand alone: they function within a network of dozens of other minerals and trace elements that influence each other’s absorption, transport and utilisation in the body.

Circle diagram showing the interactions between minerals and trace elements, including magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, selenium and potassium. The lines show how these substances influence each other's absorption, metabolism or excretion.

Minerals function as an interconnected network.

The diagram above illustrates this interplay. Magnesium influences the absorption of calcium, but also of potassium, sodium and zinc. Calcium in turn is connected to phosphorus, iron and manganese. A deficiency of one mineral can disrupt the absorption of another. An excess can have the same effect. This is precisely why Kala Health does not choose isolated minerals, but sources that naturally carry the full spectrum, in the ratios as they occur in nature.

Two marine sources, one complete formula

What makes this formula unique is the combination of two different marine raw materials, each bringing their own strength:

Aquamin® Mg TG — seawater concentrate

The first half of the capsule (300 mg) consists of Aquamin® Mg TG, a seawater concentrate from the Atlantic Ocean. This provides the magnesium: 113 mg per capsule (32% RI), together with dozens of trace minerals in their natural ratios and in ionic form.

Aquamin® TG — red algae Lithothamnion Calcareum

The second half (300 mg) is Aquamin® TG, derived from the red algae Lithothamnion Calcareum. During its life cycle, this algae absorbs minerals from the seawater and stores them in its cell structure. The result is a naturally calcium-rich extract: 94 mg calcium per capsule (10% RI), also with a broad spectrum of trace elements.

Together, these two raw materials form a complete mineral complex: magnesium and calcium in a balanced ratio, supported by more than 70 other minerals and trace elements. All of marine origin, in ionic form, and therefore easily absorbed through the intestinal wall.

Why do we formulate differently from other brands?

Most magnesium-calcium supplements on the market combine two synthetic ingredients in high doses. Magnesium citrate plus calcium carbonate, for example. On paper, that delivers impressive numbers on the packaging, but it lacks something essential: the broad spectrum of trace minerals that naturally works together with magnesium and calcium.

At Kala Health, we have been thinking differently about product formulation since 1997. Our founder Paul Klein Breteler personally formulates every product, based on the principle that minerals never occur in isolation in nature. They function as a system, in mutual ratios that have evolved over millions of years. Our formula respects that principle by exclusively using marine raw materials that naturally carry the full mineral spectrum.

The result is a supplement that fundamentally differs from a synthetic magnesium-calcium combination. Not dosed higher than necessary, not isolated, but complete and in balance.

Proven better absorption of marine minerals

A study published in the journal Nutrients (Demehin et al., 2026) showed that magnesium from seawater concentrate (Aquamin Mg) has a significantly better bioavailability than common magnesium forms such as magnesium bisglycinate when digested together with food. The researchers attribute this to two factors: the trace minerals in the concentrate protect the magnesium from binding by phytate and oxalate from food, and the amorphous structure of the seawater concentrate allows for faster dissolution. A detailed description of this study can be found on the page of our Magnesium Complex Powder.

Who is Magnesium & Calcium suitable for?

Magnesium & Calcium has been developed for adults and children who want to supplement their daily diet with a balanced combination of magnesium and calcium from natural, marine sources. The product is particularly suitable for those who:

Want to supplement both magnesium and calcium — instead of taking two separate supplements, this formula provides both minerals in one capsule, in the correct ratio to each other.

Pay extra attention to bones and teeth — both magnesium and calcium contribute to the maintenance of normal bones and the maintenance of normal teeth.

Prefer a milder magnesium dose — at 113 mg magnesium per capsule, the dose is lower than the Magnesium Complex (211 mg). For those seeking a broad mineral spectrum without a high magnesium dose, this is the right choice.

The product is 100% vegan (plant-based HPMC capsule), free from yeast, lactose and gluten. For children, the dosage can be adjusted according to body weight.

The complete Magnesium range from Kala Health

In addition to Magnesium & Calcium, we also offer the Magnesium Complex Powder, with 350 mg elemental magnesium per scoop for those who want the highest dose. The Magnesium Complex Capsules contain 211 mg elemental magnesium per capsule from 100% seawater concentrate. All products contain the full spectrum of 70+ minerals and trace elements.

Frequently asked questions

The Magnesium Complex (powder or capsules) contains exclusively seawater concentrate and is focused on a high magnesium dose: 350 mg per scoop or 211 mg per capsule. The Magnesium & Calcium formula combines seawater concentrate with the red algae Lithothamnion Calcareum, providing 113 mg magnesium and 94 mg calcium per capsule. Choose Magnesium & Calcium if you want to supplement both minerals. Choose the Magnesium Complex if you are primarily looking for a high magnesium dose.

Each raw material has its own strength. Aquamin® Mg TG (seawater concentrate) is naturally rich in magnesium, while Aquamin® TG (red algae Lithothamnion Calcareum) is naturally rich in calcium. By combining both, you get magnesium and calcium in a balanced ratio, supplemented with the full spectrum of 70+ minerals and trace elements from two marine sources.

The recommended dosage is 1 to 2 capsules per day, preferably with a meal. With 1 capsule you get 113 mg magnesium (32% RI) and 94 mg calcium (10% RI). With 2 capsules per day this doubles to 226 mg magnesium and 188 mg calcium. For children, the dosage can be adjusted according to body weight.

Yes. The dosage can be adjusted according to body weight. The capsule is plant-based (HPMC) and the product contains no synthetic additives, yeast, lactose or gluten. If in doubt, consult your doctor or nutritionist.

The capsule contains two raw materials of 300 mg each, totalling 600 mg. Because half of the capsule is reserved for the calcium-rich red algae, the magnesium dose per capsule is lower (113 mg) than in the Magnesium Complex (211 mg). This is by design: for those who want to supplement both magnesium and calcium, this dosage provides a solid daily foundation. Those looking exclusively for a high magnesium dose are better served by the Magnesium Complex.

Lithothamnion Calcareum is a species of red algae found in the cold, clean waters of the Atlantic Ocean. During its life cycle, this algae absorbs minerals from the seawater and stores them in its cell structure. The result is a naturally calcium-rich extract that, in addition to calcium, also contains dozens of other trace minerals. This makes it a fundamentally different calcium source than synthetic calcium carbonate or calcium citrate.
