What is Akkermansia muciniphila?
Akkermansia muciniphila is a bacterial species that naturally occurs in the human gastrointestinal tract. In healthy individuals, this bacterium makes up 0.5% to 5% of the total gut microbiome. The bacterium was first isolated in 2004 at Wageningen University by the research team of Prof. Dr. Willem M. de Vos.
Akkermansia muciniphila belongs to the group of commensal bacteria: microorganisms that naturally live in and on the human body. The bacterium is anaerobic, meaning it lives without oxygen.

About this product
The Akkermansia Company® Gut Support was developed based on patented technology and uses only natural ingredients. Each tablet contains 30 billion pasteurised Akkermansia muciniphila bacteria (strain MucT, ATCC BAA-835), combined with chamomile extract and B vitamins.
The formula contains vitamin B2 (riboflavin), which contributes to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes. The safety and tolerability of this supplement has been assessed in line with EFSA guidelines.

Scientific research
After extensive preclinical research, the first randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in humans was published in 2019: the Microbes4U® study. This research was conducted in collaboration with the Catholic University of Leuven.
